Cephalopod Halloween

For this project, I was given a variety of Halloweenish models and told to go to town. This piece was intended as a still shot from the beginning, mainly because each bend of the mother tentacle is a seperate piece, disguised by clever placement. There was some discussion about whether the purple tentacle was feeding the baby or just entertaining it with its grisly bauble. I leave the interpretation up to you. This was the first project I've done to make heavy use of the misss_fast_skin shader in Mental Ray, and I think it turned out rather well, all told. The grass in the background is Maya Fur.

The pumpkin and the tentacles were created by Todd Fechter, and the spinal column was modelled by Zev Wuntch. I did the squid monster's and the human's head. All of the textures and lighting were done by me as well. All modelling and rendering was completed using Maya with Mental Ray. Textures were achieved with a combination of Photoshop, Maxon Bodypaint, and Zbrush for displacement on the tentacles.

Render Layers This piece was rendered into three beauty passes, an "angle of incidence" pass, an occlusion pass, and a background plate. All told, the full render took about three hours.  Here's a shot breakdown:
